” On the backend, MTagger is built on top of the CakePHP MVC framework
and utilizes a MySQL database to retrieve tagging information. On the
front-end, we’ve implemented a number of javascript and css components
that allow the application to perform as it does and utilize such
things as ajax. We also rely heavily on the JQuery library.

Tags appear on external sites (pages other than those under
lib.umich.edu) via a paste in javascript block that writes an iframe
on the page. This iframe’s src url is a call to a php function within
the MTagger application that fetches the tags (if any) associated with
the page and constructs the grey tag cloud. As an example, you can
view the source of our main gateway page www.lib.umich.edu, and see
the script in action. The two parameters, URL and title, are passed
in and MTagger returns the tags that have been applied to the page.

  1. You are correct — we are displaying tags directly in our Aleph OPAC. The MTagger application uses the URI of a web page to associate tags. We’ve included some javascript in each catalog item display an iframe. Inside the iframe, MTagger is asked for tags associated with the Aleph item’s permanent link. If there are any existing tags (see, for example, http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu:80/F/?func=direct&doc_number=005562576), the tags are pulled in and displayed. If not, you see the “Be first to tag this item message” — for example, http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu:80/F/?func=direct&doc_number=004255100.
